Celebrations of St. Patrick’s day occur all over the world on March 17th and fancy dress clothing themed party’s are held in streets that get closed off and at various venues everywhere. Of course, Ireland is the centre of attraction as this is an official Irish holiday but with a strong population of Irish people in countries such as Canada, America, Australia and England, the parties are going on around the globe.

Pictures of party celebrations on Saint Patrick’s day are posted all over the Internet each and every year and for those living in London, England, Trafalgar Square is the place to be. Traditional Irish clothing is usually worn by most at these celebrations and drinks such as Guinness, Irish cream and whiskey are always flowing. This traditional celebration is in fact supposed to be a religious acknowledgement but seems to have turned into thousands of worldwide mindless drunken party events!

Gifts are exchanged amongst the more dedicated in celebrating this annual day, lyrics to specially written songs are sung out around pubs and clubs and traditional Irish food is shared at many events. In Ireland itself it is an official public holiday and the major cities close off streets in cities like Dublin and Cork just to name a few. So if you are usually looking for a good excuse to throw a party complete with a theme that you can dress up in fancy clothes, eat different foods and drink lots of Irish drinks then the celebration of St. Patrick’s day may be right up your alley. Oh, and if you throw a party, be sure to mail us some pictures!

St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration occurring on the 17th March every year honouring one of the patron saints of Ireland and is celebrated not only by the Irish people but Canadians, British, Australians, South Africans, Americans and people from all over the world and different cultures. Parties and occasions are held all throughout the world and usually themed along the lines of all things Irish. Green clothes, Irish food and drinks such as whiskey or Guinness milk stout are all part of the worldwide celebrations and in Ireland itself, as it is an official public holiday, parades and festivals occur in cities such as Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Galway as well as towns and villages all over the country.

Leprechauns are to be seen on St. Patrick’s Day all over the globe in their green outfits celebrating and partying at various events annually and this celebration has its roots planted in the 18th century and the Catholic church. Many church leaders and elders feel that the day has become far too commercialised in the modern day and feel that people just use it now as an excuse for drinking copious amounts of alcohol and acting irresponsibly. Many of them believe that it is time to reclaim Saint Paddy’s Day as a church celebration and not a mindless drunken festival.

One of the reasons this particular day is celebrated globally is due to the fact that many Irish soldiers were based all over the world during the wars. Places such as Montreal in Canada have a large population of Irish people living there and although it is not an official holiday in all countries it is still marked as an important day in history. Whether you are a Roman Catholic or not, whether you drink Guinness, whiskey, Irish cream or do not touch alcohol at all, whether you like to dress in green as a leprechaun, wave flags with shamrocks on or live in a country thousands of miles from Ireland, no matter who you are or where you live it is hard to get away from the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations taking place all over the world.

A plane crash in New York USA which involved a passenger jet crash-landing on the Hudson river has amazingly resulted in all 155 passengers and crew being rescued alive and safe. The heroic captain, Chesley Sullenberger of US Airways Airbus A320 – Flight 1549, did a fantastic job of skilfully managing to land the plane on the river and checking the aircraft twice to make sure everybody got out safely before emerging himself.

What caused the plane crash in the New York Hudson river? Although there is an investigation underway the pilot reported what is termed a ‘double bird strike’ just after taking off and requested to return again before having to crash-land in the near-by river. It seems as though a large flock of birds, possibly geese, collided with the plane and went straight into both engines causing them to shut down.

One bystander reported that it did not look as though the aircraft was in trouble but was wondering why it was coming in so low, next thing it landed on the water as if it was landing smoothly on a runway at the airport! The next few minutes the doors opened and people started getting out on the wings and rescue boats and ferries with emergency services rushed to the scene. There are some people with injuries probably caused as the plane hit the water but everyone is alive and all passengers and crew got out before the airbus filled with water.

The New York Mayor has praised Chesley Sullenberger and the crew of the flight for the way the near disaster was handled so professionally and smoothly. It’s great to hear of wonderful news like this and how peoples lives have been spared, it’s not every day you will see a plane land on the waters of the Hudson River New York USA!
