The facebook.com network launched in the month of February 2004 and since then the facebook phenomenon has swept the world and now has over 8 million users in America alone and stands as the second biggest social network on the Internet with MySpace still being first. It all got started by a student called Mark Zuckerberg studying at Harvard University in the U.S. who was doing it as one of his hobbies at the time. Popularity of the project began to spread like wildfire and before long Mark Zuckerberg was quitting Harvard and taking two of his fellow students with him to develop and promote the facebook network on a full time basis.
It is reported that the facebook.com domain name was purchased for a price of around $200.000. The network was originally only available to students and ex-students of colleges and universities around the world but now anybody can sign up for a facebook account online. And they do, in their millions! People networking, finding facebook friends, experimenting with applications, joining facebook groups and so on.
